Green River Inn –
A Southern Vermont Bed and Breakfast
Come relax; whether you are in a hammock by the
river,
near the campfire, or under the starry skies.
In 1934 Mathias and
Frances Lorenz bought a farmhouse on the Green River in Sandgate,
and started raising chickens. They welcomed their friends who came
from the city to visit. The farm became the Evergreen Inn when the
farmhouse was enlarged, and six tiny evergreens were planted in
front. The Lorenz's daughter, Matilda, and her husband, Kenny
eventually began running the Southern Vermont Bed and Breakfast.
Their seasonal Inn was a haven for many city people seeking a
country retreat and for local artists who felt inspired by the
natural beauty of the area. Many artists would place their easel on
the grounds and create beautiful landscapes, some of which still
hang in the Inn today. Many of Matilda's original guests continue to
visit the Inn bringing their children and grandchildren. Matilda,
who lives locally, still drops by to say "hi" or visits with old
friends. Her natural charisma continues to add old world charm to
the Inn.
In 1997, Betsy and Jim Gunn purchased the Evergreen. They renovated
and redecorated the Southern Vermont Bed and Breakfast, adding many
special features and changing the name to the Green River Inn. The
sixteen individually decorated guest rooms feature king and queen
size beds, private baths and air conditioning. The rooms have been
beautifully decorated with quilts, down comforters and waverly
prints.
In 2004, the Inn was purchased by Bob and Carol Potozney, who now
invite guests to enjoy the charm of the past, the luxury of modern
amenities and the natural beauty of Sandgate. Bob and Carol invite
all who seek to relax, rejuvenate and explore the natural harmony of
the mountains, the soothing sounds of the river, the magnificent
star filled skies and the beautiful surrounding valley. Come enjoy
the completely refurbished Green River Inn and experience a touch of
the past in a true Vermont country setting. |
